For my Psychology class, we had to choose a mental disorder and create an art piece about it. I chose Hoarding Disorder. After researching and learning more about it, I decided to make an illustration showing the difficult and brave first step of a hoarders recovery. Most hoarders are embarrassed of their home and refuse to seek help from maintenance when an appliance dies or invite family members over, fearing they will judge their lose of control on life. Asking for help is so incredibly difficult for them, that I wanted to show that it is okay to reach out and ask others for help. Elderly women have the highest percentage of having hoarding disorders and cats are the most hoarded animal. There are so many items collected over the years, that the hoarder gets attached to everything; sometimes it's hard for them to even take out the trash. It was really important to me to show a piece that shows the process of recovery, because there are already so many pieces of the disorder itself.
